Embarking is the feeling of departure, whenever we start something new we embark for the unknown.
To embark on an action with the collective's experiences in a boat image, is to live that time that seems to stand still among other times.
We are a family owned and operated business.
The image of our precarious boat was mixed with the precariousness of another space between our lives, the university, where we also sailed in the unknown, and that no matter how much we used our bamboo branches to row, we were carried away by the tide.
We are a family owned and operated business.
The figure of a vessel, whatever the size of its shape, activates an all-time memory. Thinking about it, I remember that the boat is the first means of transport that effectively allowed the human being to cross the world. Before the boat, which I don't even know when there is so much, each continent, each piece of land surrounded by a little water, summed up the world of those who lived there. The peoples closed in on themselves, knowing the rest of the world only through imagery. It was the vessels that made us beings that cross borders, allowed the encounter between the "ones" and the "others", for better or for worse, mixing them. It is not for nothing that we do not fly, transit or anything else over the internet: we surf.
We are a family owned and operated business.
This transportation by water also carries more than crossing borders that, however invisible they may be, are conceived in our geography. Symbolically the boat was (or is), in different cultures, the means for the transition between other worlds: from life to death, from the body to the soul. Navigating is also transmuting.
We are a family owned and operated business.
The boat ---> The collective boat-making experience of a living and anamorphic organism.
The conception and maturation of the idea.
On the way to discover and reconcile the formal, conceptual and empirical imaginations of the boat in the midst of (at first) chaos of the collective indeterminate.
The fertile consensual disorientation to the outbreak of ideas and then the production (and product) of a simple proposition:
Do not foresee the unpredictable and perform an unplanned self-management body work.
how was it.
Everyone's boat, and everyone's boat. open to the game of exchange and, for me, the imaginative play of make-believe
fickle, unstable,
strip boot raises lower moves and moves.
And there was nothing to go wrong.
The wind: the wind that we wanted to put in a box.
But then it would be just air.
And until it was beautiful in the end.
And in the middle.
And before.
Watching now
Just the desire to sail (together)
Whatever that means.

The vessel took care, above all, of negotiation. Agreement, adjustment, conciliation, connection, conversation, understanding ... there are many synonyms, and they could all replace the term "negotiation". Now I wonder why I decided to use it, probably that it was not one in particular, or some subtle association made almost automatically when thinking about a boat, a glimpse that recalls its history, some idea embedded in the collective unconscious. By that criterion, there are others of those synonyms that share this burden. Covenant, for example. It was a large vessel that would have represented God's covenant with a man, Noah. “But with you I will establish my covenant, and you will enter the ark with your children, your wife and your children's wives. " Genesis 6, 18. However, business seems to follow the vessels' journey through history much more closely, perhaps also towards a new divinity. I do not think it is possible to point out whether the ambition to capture and exchange resources was more the cause or consequence of groups of subjects making the decision to cross oceans and rivers, determining to move from place to place in unknown and adverse paths, giving up the land. What is known is that they did it, and always with something in tow. Spices, grains, minerals ... other people. Today, even competing with many means of transport, it is still responsible for much of the movement of goods in the world, more than people in itself. They have also evolved in technology, they are almost automata - as during the flood, the people who guide them transfer their faith in something in the sky, intricate satellite systems around the planet that observe and measure it. In any case, business vessels represent radical transformations undergone by many peoples, the basis of strength and subjugation by those who descended from them. Many did not even have anything else that mirrored something close to that in their cultures. They carry the weight, therefore, of countless apocalypses. Loss of home, freedom, own sense of existence. Not for nothing, in a way that makes me think that this thing sails out of time, it was designed for a long time to isolate those considered crazy and rejected from the rest of society. The existence of ships that passed from city to city dates back to the Middle Ages, catching their driven mad. “First, based on the strangeness of the different, which is precisely what we distort here, we judge as secondary or inferior; we will create the circumstances that unbalance and cause suffering to the other. Now, we pass again and collect all the fruit of it. ” It seems to reflect an entity-vessel, with little concern for locating itself in time.
However, what was done with the vessel work, perhaps not as a conscious and prior option, but as a real unfolding of a desire, was the reframing of the term negotiation in some ways. We negotiate and renegotiate with the materials, starting from the inclination to use reused materials and preferably because it is found on the university campus. We understand that the very stories of these diverse pieces of wood, plates, pipes, cones, nets, etc. it was already imbued with memories, carried on dialogues and previous exchanges - with old functions, processes that were subjugated from the moment they were created until after they were abandoned, other pieces now absent with which they were completed and who knows where they would be now , with the locality of Ilha do Fundão. Bringing this recycling of information to the vessel also seemed to circumscribe within a context with more meanings and symbologies. And the negotiation did not stop there, continuing during the de facto action, where we conjugated different fragments, we saw new shapes appear and deformed them again afterwards, to repeat everything again. At many times, the result really looked very similar to the silhouette of a boat, and each person in the collective took it in an individually different way. While some tried to get away from the literal contiguity with the vessel, others found comfort in it.
Space and time also took part in the negotiation. The choice of the place that would serve as the ground and foundation for the construction was crucial; we knew that a good part of the scope of the action depended on it - it occurred during an event in which other works and actions were presented, and ours took place at a more distant pole - and we weighed this fact on a scale, with other more concrete counterpoints. We think about the three-dimensionality and the materiality of the project, the sculptural making, the plot and the scene. Time also proved to be an important fact, with which it would be necessary to come to terms. The unstable climate alluded again to Noah's Ark, making us reflect with what kind of strength we negotiated, what kind of pact the act of lifting there and now that vessel sealed.
However, all these aspects seemed to derive from the greater negotiation materialized there, which was indeed a proposed methodological objective, but which at a certain point presented itself with a greater propensity than expected to reinforce the main object of the Art: Ecologies course. The work and the sense of collectivity that already existed and was boosted even before there was work. Talk about this very dense and certainly much bigger than the course itself, than the vessel itself, the ecosystem itself. The construction went through several stages before it actually took place, and in each of these phases the potential to multiply for each person was unique. The preconception, the discussion, the choices, the meetings, the modeling and remodeling of the boat, the natural choreography that emerged from the action, we know that we used an energy that went beyond thinking in a sense for art beyond the market, but that it turned its movement inward, in the fertile generation of subjectivities and new ways of relating to the different.

Pensamos a tridimensionalidade e a materialidade do projeto, o fazer escultórico, a trama e a cena.
